Dun-nan Liu   劉敦南 

Dun-nan Liu is a Chinese-American composer, who was born into a Christian family. He entered the middle school associated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1957 and earned his B.A. degree from the conservatory in 1966 with a major in composition. Starting in 1974, he served as a composer-in-residence in the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and taught in the Composition Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music until 1983. Continuing his education, he studied at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, where he received his M.A. in 1986. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1993.

Among his compositions, the representative works include the piano concerto The Mountain Forest (1979), the orchestra suite The Poem of  Fantasia (1982), the piano trio Five Pieces for Piano Violin and Cello (1987), the symphony poem Lament (1990), the ballet Liang Shan-Bo and Zhu Ying-Tai (1997), and its First Suite and Second Suite (2002) and many other works. 

Dun-nan Liu has completely established a compositional system called “ Tonal Twelve-tone Aggregate “ which is unique with a style of his own. His compositions are held in high regard. The piano concerto The Mountain Forest won first place at the First National Competition of Symphony Works in China in 1981; it was also selected as one of the Twentieth Century Masterpieces by Chinese Musicians in 1993. His harp solo Fantasy, which was written at the invitation of the harp master Susann McDonald for the Second World Harp Congress in Israel in 1985, was critically acclaimed as “ One of the very few excellent harp pieces in recent times.” His piano suite Nursery Rhythms—-For  21st Century Pianist (2002) is selected as repertoire requirements in the Piano Syllabus 2007 of Certificate of Merit by the Music Teachers’ Association of California.

劉敦南,美籍華裔作曲家。出生於一個基督教家庭。1957年進入上海音樂學院附中作曲專業,1966年畢業於該院作曲系。1974年任上海交響樂團常任作曲家,並兼任上海音樂學院作曲系教師。1983年赴美深造。1987年以印第安納大學優異的碩士學位成績獲芝加哥大學研究院全額獎學金,1993年完成博士學位。
代表作品有:鋼琴協奏曲《山林》(1979),樂隊組曲《幻想音詩》(1982),鋼琴三重奏《樂曲五首》(1987),交響詩《挽歌》(1990),芭蕾舞劇《梁山伯與祝英台》(1997)及其《第一組曲》《第二組曲》(2002)等。
劉敦南已完整地建立起他自成一家的音樂創作體系——-“有調性的十二音聚集”。 他創作的數十部各類體裁的作品多有好評廣有影響。其中鋼琴協奏曲《山林》曾獲1081年首屆中國交響音樂作品比賽首獎並入選“20世紀華人音樂經典”;受豎琴大師蘇珊·麥克唐納之邀為在以色列舉行的第二屆世界豎琴家代表大會而寫的《幻想曲》(1985)被譽為“近年來不可多得的豎琴獨奏曲”;鋼琴套曲《童謠集——贈21世紀的鋼琴家們》(2002)被加州音樂教師協會選為鋼琴考試指定曲目之一。
